Grand plans for former hotel in Saltdean, Brighton

Working with Brighton PCT and the local GPs, GPI have now commenced fit out work for a new Primary Care Centre to be incorporated into the former Grand Ocean Hotel in Saltdean near Brighton. The new facility will provide surgery accommodation for both the Longridge Avenue Surgery and the St Lukes' Surgery as well as a Lloyds pharmacy.
Accommodating a surgery inside such a building has been a challenge for the GPI team. The main building itself is listed so additional listed building consent was a requirement and a sympathetic yet practical design was essential to make a Health Centre viable. The design seeks to retain as many of the original building features as possible whilst providing the high quality accommodation required in the modern Primary Care Environment. The building is also part of a much larger residential development being carried out by Explore Living PLC, which again added an additional dimension to the approach to the project.

The majority of the accommodation for the two GP surgeries will be located on the ground floor with staff facilities etc. located on the lower level. The two doctors surgeries will still operate independently but by coming together into the same building efficiencies have been generated through some shared accommodation such as waiting area, staff facilities etc. There will be a shared access to the surgery and an element of on site parking for disabled patients, coupled with on street parking and good public transport links directly outside the surgery and in the local vicinity.
