October, 2009 GPI wins Design Award for Health Centre in Wales GPI's Cwm Gwyrdd Medical Centre in Wales has won the Management in Practice Design and Facilities Award 2009. The large, eco-friendly new health centre was announced the winner of the national award, sponsored by property development specialists Clark Weightman, on Tuesday (6 October 2009). The award acknowledges the most innovative new build or renovation of a GP surgery. Flexibility of design was a key concept for the £3m construction of the Cwm Gwyrdd Medical Centre, with the site allowing for partitions to be removed or added and for further expansion of the building at ground and first-floor level. Environmental objectives were also high on the practice's agenda - the building's design maximises natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting, and the use of renewable energy reduces reliance on traditional gas and electric requirements. The 1,800m² contemporary building incorporates sustainable facilities for a range of health services, embodying excellence in innovative design, community consultation, sustainability, energy efficiency, environmental management and value for money. Taking the lead from "Designed for Life", the premises support high quality architectural design, reviewed by the Design Commission for Wales (DCfW). The scheme was also delivered ahead of schedule, within a timeframe of 11 months from commencement on site, giving patients early access to modern healthcare facilities. The new primary care centre is a testament to a successful partnership between Rhondda Cynon Taff Teaching Local Health Board, Dr Das, Dr Baksi, and GPI. It demonstrates a holistic approach to creating an innovative design that integrates a number of services under one roof.
