GPI scheme in Wales scoops 2 more Awards

GPI are delighted to announce that the Cwm Gwyrdd Medical Centre in Gilfach Goch was declared the winner of both the 'Best Sustainable Design' and 'Best Sustainable Estate Strategy in Primary Care' categories at the Management in Practice Magazine's 'Building Better Healthcare Awards 2009'.

The awards, presented on 12th November at The Brewery, Chiswell Street, London, recognise projects that advance sustainable development through design, sustainable environmental benefits, efficient use of resources and NEAT excellence. GPI’s design team, together with the Rhondda Cynon Taff LHB, were able to demonstrate a holistic approach to the delivery of an effective sustainability strategy for the primary care estate.

The contemporary structure, designed and built to NEAT excellence standard, uses sustainable and local materials which complement the surrounding buildings, topography and locality. Key design features in the building include a green roof, solar heating for water, natural ventilation, extensive natural day-lighting and a super insulated and airtight envelope.

The Centre, the first to be delivered under the current system of premises procurement in Wales, incorporates state-of-the-art facilities for two GP Practices, accommodation for two NHS Trusts and a Co-op pharmacy. It replaces outdated, 'not fit for purpose' premises with a modern larger building enabling the integration of primary, community and therapy services under one 'green' roof Rob Baron, Business Manager at the Medical Centre commented "Cwm Gwyrdd is one of the best looking surgeries that I have seen. It's very clever in the way that it blends into the surrounding area and the people of Gilfach are very proud of it. Working in the building is a pleasure as it is very light and airy. The light tunnels on the 1st floor are very effective and introduce a huge amount of natural light into the building."
